Colorful spots and blemishes are common skin concerns for many men and women that you may think you can’t treat. At Ohealth by Dr. T in Pembroke Pines, Florida, Marlene Tages-Cordova, DO, offers noninvasive intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments to break apart pigment or reduce body hair using bright flashes of light. To learn more about IPL and find out if it can treat your skin concerns, call Ohealth by Dr. T or request an appointment online today.

What is IPL?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a noninvasive therapy that improves your skin’s texture and appearance. IPL devices use flashes of bright light with multiple wavelengths to penetrate the second layer of your skin (the dermis) while leaving the surface layer unharmed.

Pigment cells within the dermis absorb the wavelengths of light and convert them to heat. The heat causes the pigment cells to break apart and disperse, reducing the appearance of redness and other skin discoloration.

While most people opt to get IPL treatments on their face where spots and blemishes are most visible, you can get the treatment on your chest, neck, hands, and other areas of skin.

What can IPL do for my skin?

IPL treatments are specifically effective for treating skin discoloration and other pigmented blemishes. After a few quick sessions, you’ll see a notable reduction in:

  • Rosacea
  • Spider veins
  • Freckles
  • Age spots
  • Birthmarks

You can also use IPL as a method of body hair removal, as the pigment in the hair absorbs the light in a similar way as the pigment in your skin.

Do IPL treatments hurt?

Some patients hesitate to pursue IPL treatments for fear that the pain or discomfort will be intolerable for them.

However, Dr. Tages-Cordova uses a numbing cream to keep you from feeling the full extent of the light’s sensations.

Nevertheless, most patients say that the treatment feels no more painful than a tiny, tight rubber band snapping against their skin.

Am I a good candidate for IPL skin treatments?

While IPL treatments are largely safe and effective for their intended purposes, not everyone is an ideal candidate. Before you undergo the therapy, Dr. Tages-Cordova asks about your general health, skin type, and intentions for the treatment.

She and the team may decide that IPL treatments are right for you if you:

  • Don’t scar easily
  • Have light-toned skin
  • Have dark body hair (if you’re using it for hair removal)
  • Are willing to stick to a treatment plan that might include several sessions
  • Aren’t pregnant
  • Don’t tan your skin
  • Don’t have a severe skin condition flare-up (like eczema)
  • Have realistic expectations

If IPL isn’t your best option for correcting your skin imperfections, there are plenty of other options available. Dr. Tages-Cordova and her team can recommend other procedures and products that are a better fit.
