As the soft protective shell that covers your body, your skin has an important job. While protecting your body’s inner organs and tissues, it tends to pick up a lot of damage of its own. At Ohealth by Dr. T, Marlene Tages-Cordova, DO, offer skin-rejuvenation treatments using the Icon™ laser. You can even use the laser to minimize hair growth on your body instead of burning your skin with razors or harsh waxes. Icon Laser Q & A

How does the Icon laser work?

The Icon™ laser is an impressively versatile medical device that’s primarily used for aesthetic purposes. It comes with several different handpieces that deliver different amounts of energy and varying light wavelengths.

For example, some handpieces target pigment cells in your skin to break apart and reduce dark spots while others target and constrict blood vessels to reduce inflammation and visible veins.

A favorite feature of laser devices like the Icon laser is their ability to stimulate your skin’s healing processes and create new collagen fibers. Collagen is a type of fibrous protein that gives your skin firmness and shape.

What is the Icon laser for?

The Icon laser works on all skin types and is effective in reducing many common blemishes, spots, and scars.

After a few simple sessions, you’ll notice fewer or less noticeable:

  • Acne scars
  • Surgical scars
  • Injury scars
  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Stretch marks
  • Spider veins
  • Age spots
  • Sun damage
  • Rosacea redness

Additionally, the Icon laser is used to permanently reduce or fully eliminate body hair in areas that you’d normally shave or wax. The laser effectively treats any area of skin on your body.

Is the Icon laser safe for my skin?

The Icon laser works on every type and color of skin. While the treatment is safe, you might see a few mild side effects after your treatment, like redness and swelling. These effects usually go away by themselves after a day or two.

To minimize irritation, Dr. Tages-Cordova may recommend gentle skin products to use. Ice packs immediately after your treatment can help, too. You can always cover the redness with some makeup.

Am I a candidate for treatments with the Icon laser?

Despite being safe on all skin types, Icon laser treatments aren’t for everyone. Dr. Tages-Cordova advises against the treatments if you:

  • Have active acne or another flare-up
  • Have a weak immune system or an immune disorder
  • Take certain acne medications regularly
  • Form keloids and other scars easily
  • Have expectations that aren’t realistic

The limitations are few and far between. If you aren’t a candidate for laser treatments, Dr. Tages-Cordova gives you suggestions for other treatments to improve your skin or remove your hair.

If you’re unhappy with your skin after years in the Florida sun, call Ohealth by Dr. T or book a consultation online to discuss the Icon laser with Dr. Tages-Cordova.
